The
Menu is a chance for you to learn about various topics from
the book. You will have the chance to select which topics
and project ideas interest you the most. The Menu is organized
by topic. Here are the topics you have to choose from:

Simply click a topic above to learn what projects you have
to choose from. Once you have made your decision, you will
then use another link to reach that topic's main page. This
page will give more specific details, along with resources
you will need to complete the projects.
Some of
the projects listed specifically mention the word "research."
Keep in mind that even if an activity doesn't tell you to
complete some research, you will still need to do some type
of information gathering to help you complete your work.

Author
Study of Will Hobbs
1. Create a poster that contains 5 facts about Mr.
Hobbs.
2. Write a letter to Mr. Hobbs. In your letter, share with
him your thoughts and feelings about Bearstone. You
may also want to ask him any questions you have for him.

Gold
Mining
1. After researching the history of gold mining in Colorado,
create a list of the pros and cons for being a miner.
2. You are living on the east coast and you want to head west
in search of gold, but you need help. Write a short article
that will be printed in the local newspaper "advertising"
for some one to accompany you.
3. Create a complete packing list of what you would need to
take with you on a trip west.
4. Locate and research a famous miner. Write a biography of
their life.

Greenback
Cutthroat Trout
1. Research and then write an expository paragraph about the
Cutthroat Trout. Illustrate and color a picture of the trout
to go along with your paragraph.
2. Write a short story entitled "The day in the life
of a Cutthroat Trout."
3. Research and then write a report on the Cutthroat Trout.

Grizzly
Bears
1. Research and then write an expository paragraph about the
Grizzly Bear. Illustrate and color a picture of the bear to
go along with your paragraph.
2. Write a short story entitled "The day in the life
of a Grizzly Bear."
3. Research and then write a report on the Grizzly Bear.
4. Design and create a diorama of a Grizzly Bear in it's environment.
Along with the diorama, write an expository paragraph that
explains the environment.

Ranching/Farming
1. Write a short story entitled "The day in the life
of a Rancher or Farmer"
2. Write a report explaining the role that early ranchers
and farmers played in their community and the growth of the
West.

San Juan National Forest
1. Create an advertisement that someone would see in a magazine,
encouraging them to visit San Juan National Forest.
2. Create a travel brochure that encourages someone to visit
the forest.

The
Southwestern Region of Colorado
1. Create a travel brochure that encourages someone to visit
the southwest region.
2. Select a point of interest in the southwest region (eg.
Mesa Verde). After researching this point of interest, write
a report and create a visual element to share with the class.

The
Ute Indian Culture
1. Select an aspect of the Ute Culture to research: Bear Dance,
Sun Dance, Tribal History, Ute Families, Ute Creation Story,
Tribal Flag, Chief Ouray, Legends and Stories, or another
topic of your choice. After you have completed your research,
write a short report explaining your findings. Then construct
some type of "artifact" to go with your report.
For example, if you learned about the instruments used by
the Ute tribe, you could create one of those instruments.

The
Weminuche Wilderness
1. Create an advertisement that someone would see in a magazine,
