1. Cloyd has just turned down Walter's offer to help him learn how to read. Why do you think he did this and with such emotion?


2. Why do you think Walter reacted to Cloyd's running away so calmly? Would you have reacted the same way? Explain.


3. What did Walter offer Cloyd for dessert? Why does he consider this food to be so special?


4. What did Maude, Walter's wife, mean by the following: "A ranch is like a house, but a farm is a home."?


5. Why do you think Cloyd is always feeling uncomfortable when Walter asks him questions about his family?


6. Why do you think Cloyd made such an instant connection with the blue roan? What did he decide to name the horse?


7. Why was Cloyd so determined to prove Walter wrong and get the fence completed in less than two years?


8. Walter suggested to Cloyd that he "...give that fenceline a rest. Maybe do a little of this and a little of that,..." Why did Cloyd take this to mean that Walter was telling him to give up? Do you think Walter was telling him to give up? Explain.
