The Bear's Den > How to answer a question using a complete sentence.

When answering a question using a complete sentence, the most important thing to remember is to use words from the question. Here are a few examples:

Example 1
QUESTION: Why did the chicken cross the road?

ANSWER: The chicken crossed the road to get to the other side.

Notice how many of the words from the question that I included in my answer. They are highlighted in red.

Example 2
QUESTION: Why was the street wet this morning?

ANSWER: The street was wet this morning because a rain storm went through last night.

Once again, notice how many words from the question I used in my answer.

Example 3
QUESTION: How did you feel at the end of the story when Dorothy returned to Kansas?

Here are a couple of different ways you could answer this question.
ANSWER:
At the end of the story, Dorothy returned to Kansas. This made me feel very happy for her and her family.

ANSWER: When Dorothy returned to Kansas at the end of the story, I felt relieved.

Here are a few other important things to keep in mind when giving quality answers.

1. Reread the question AND answer. Did you answer the question? It is often easy to get off task and lose your focus.

2. Details! After someone else (like your teacher) reads your answer, will they have a complete understanding of what your thoughts are, as well as what you read? Be sure to include specific details so your reader is not left with another question.

3. Evidence! Reread your answer. Did you provide specific evidence from the story that supports your personal thoughts and feelings?
