1. By the beginning of chapter 8, Walter and Cloyd's relationship is starting to have problems. What do you think is the cause of these problems?


2. Do you think Cloyd was jealous of how easily Walter talked to the red-haired man that came to hunt? Why?


3. What did Cloyd do when it was time to bale the hay? What was Walter's response?


4. What did Cloyd do after the red-haired man returned to the farm with the bear he had killed? Why do you think he had such a wild outburst?


5. Why do you think Cloyd wants to "...stand up to the old man for punishment..."? Would you have stayed to face Walter, or would you have run away while you had the chance? Explain.


6. Up until now, how has Walter always reacted after Cloyd has done something wrong? Why do you think Walter reacted differently to what Cloyd did to his peaches and fenceposts?
