Discovery Educator National Institute

One of 40 teachers from across the country chosen to attend the 5-day Institute at U.C. Berkeley. I created multimedia projects and learned more about digital storytelling and new online technologies.

2006-2009 Digital Educator Mentor – Douglas County School District (DCSD)
My project entitled, "Multimedia Colorado...Now & Then,” focuses on integration across the subjects of: reading, writing, social studies, and technology.  The components of my Digital Educator Toolkit include:  MacBook computer, 3 Video iPods, digital video camera, and USB keyboard.

Soaring Hawk – Building Staff Development
As the Instructional Computer Resource teacher, I planned and presented sessions to the staff on the following topics:

  Digital Storytelling:  Over the course of three weeks, staff members are learning about the basics of digital storytelling, creating their own digital story, and locating resources that their students can use for storytelling in the classroom.
Writing & Technology:  Resources and strategies for integrating Information Literacy & Educational Technology into writing instruction and curriculum.
unitedstreaming:  Instruction on how to use the service, as well as integration ideas.
Blogging:  Uses in the classroom.
SchoolCenter:  How to use the Internet-based web site development tool.
Software:  Instruction around the various district software titles.
General Technology Tools:  Instruction around email, using the server, organizing personal files and folders, and Copyright & Fair Use Guidelines.
2006-2007
Instructional Computer Resource Teacher Meetings - DCSD
Over the course of the 2006-2007 school year I presented sessions on the following topics:
  unitedstreaming Advanced Tips:  In this hands-on session, participants will learn how to utilize video segments, articles, links, etc. in Assignment Builder & Quiz Center.
Instructional Uses for Google Earth:  Participants received hands-on training of how to use Google Earth and how to incorporate unitedstreaming & Internet content.
DEN Overview:  Attendees received an overview of the Discovery Educator Network.
06/06 Technology in Education (TIE) Conference - Presenter, Copper Mountain
Presentation was entitled “Media Moves the Minds of Millennials.”  Focused on helping teachers capture the teachable moments in their classroom and how to integrate digital media into their curriculum and daily classroom instruction.  Participants also viewed examples of technology-rich projects.
2005-2006 Staff Development Instructor � Douglas County School District
I was the co-instructor for various technology courses that included instruction on the following software titles:  Inspiration, Kidspiration, unitedstreaming, Timeliner, KidPix, Enchanted Learning, and Graph Club.  These courses were open to all DCSD certified employees.

Discovery Educator Network Events
During my time in the Discovery Educator Network (DEN) I have been involved in the following activities and events:
  • Currently working with Discovery Education on a trial use of the ThinkLink Learning Assessment, a research-based Predictive Assessment Series that matches diagnostic assessments to each state's high-stakes test.
Focused on the use and integration of the six iLife components.
• Virtual Earth & Space Project:  My classroom participated in a collaborative project with other classrooms from across the country.  They completed “missions” that allowed them to learn about various earth & space topics, while integrating technology.
• Attended the 1st Annual West Coast Regional DEN Institute in San Diego, California.
• Worked with the Discovery Channel Marketing Department to promote their new service, Cosmeo.
• Google Earth: Collaborative project with nine other classrooms from around the country. Students take part in webinars, researching various states, and posting information to Moodle. Students will also create Google Earth files and podcasts.
• Beta Tester for the DEN web site.
• I have participated in the following EdTech Connect Webinars: Media for Motivated Minds (Hall Davidson), GoogleEarth (John Kuglin), & Building Learning Communities (Alan November).
