Standard #1: Movement

Hawaii
The purpose of this lesson is for the students to become knowledgeable about Hawaii the state and Hawaii the island. The children will also work on reading maps of the islands. The children will come to know the customs, climates and other fun little facts. They will also come to know the eight islands.

Little House on the Prairie
The purpose of this lesson is to directly involve the students of a late 1800’s pioneer family. Through reading, activities and research they will recreate life in the times of covered wagons. Students will understand life on the trail and the hardships they encountered as the crossed the United States territory.

The Texas Indians
The purpose of this unit is to teach students about basic things of the Texas Indians. They will learn about the distinct geography of certain tribes. They will also learn about specific things that distinguished one tribe from another. We will also learn how to identify where certain tribes lived on the Texas map. This unit is designed to provide your students with information and activities centered around various types of Texas Indian tribes.

 
 

Standard #2: Culture

A New Life: Coming to America
(WebQuest) Write a play about immigration in the 1800's through Ellis Island.

Alaska
The goal of this lesson is to make children aware of the differences all over the United States. This lesson will give students the opportunity to learn about a different part of the US, and recognize and appreciate the similarities and differences. Students will be introduced to the many aspects of life in Alaska.

Arizona
The purpose of this series of lessons is to inform the students about Arizona. They will be doing experiments and activities with things that deal with Arizona.

Art for Sale
A WebQuest that has students looking at art and culture of the Pacific Northwest. Use a spreadsheet to examine pricing trends.

“Carefully Taught”: The Effect of Regions on Prejudice
Students will learn about and experience prejudice.

Colonial American Art
(WebQuest) Research 3 paintings from American Colonial times and make a brochure.

Dispelling the Myth: A Study of Two Cultures in Arizona
(WebQuest) Cultural diversity, specifically focused on Native American culture.

Immigration Activity
This lesson plan examines the early immigrants who arrived in the Northeastern region of the United States. Students take an electronic field trip to Ellis Island.

Meet the Immigrants
(WebQuest) Students study immigrants from different countries and eras to discern similarities in reasons for coming, and common problems encountered.

Texas
The purpose of this thematic unit encompasses many things. Not only should this unit enrich the students’ knowledge and understanding of Texas, but it will span over many different content areas as well.

Acadia National Park
Students will learn about the history, features, activities, and economy of this national park. The students will also learn about the importance of the park to the state of Maine. Students will also be taught about the state of Maine and they will learn about cities surrounding Acadia, ex. Bar Harbor.

Crusin’ to the Southeast
(WebQuest) Design a tour of the Southeast United States.

Geography of the United States
In this unit, the students will demonstrate knowledge of the basic geographical features of each state such as its location, capital, rivers, mountains, the region it lies within, major cities, and nickname.

Humans, the Environment, and the Great Plains
These lesson plans should provide you with some good starting places for using this web site or for teaching other lessons to your students about the interrelationship of people and the environment on the northern Great Plains.

Making a Relief Map of the United States
Students will use materials such as rocks, sand and twigs to make a physical/relief map of the United States.

Wall Mural of Land Features
In this culminating activity students are to work in small cooperative groups to create a wall mural which represents one of the following regions: mountains, deserts, grasslands, and forests.

The purpose in studying the War of the Alamo is to better educate the students about Texas History. What took place at the Alamo so many years ago is what formed Texas into what it is today. By studying this war, students will gain knowledge of the past while exploring the Internet and having dress-up and Pinata day.

Arizona
The purpose of this series of lessons is to inform the students about Arizona. They will be doing experiments and activities with things that deal with Arizona.

Regions of the United States
This integrated lesson helps students understand the complex physical and human characteristics of places and regions.

 

Standard #5: Change

The Adventures of the Alamo
The purpose in studying the War of the Alamo is to better educate the students about Texas History. What took place at the Alamo so many years ago is what formed Texas into what it is today. By studying this war, students will gain knowledge of the past while exploring the Internet and having dress-up and Pinata day.

Economic Spotter: Resources During World War II
You are an economic spotter! You can spot economic concepts in history. This lesson will take you back in time when the world was at war! During World War II, the United States was forced to make changes. There was a huge problem with scarcity! Scarcity is whenever there are limited resources and unlimited wants. Scarcity exists whenever the wants for a good or service exceed the resources needed to make that good or service. Can you spot the scarce resources needed to help the US win WWII?

Standard #8: Systems

Acadia National Park
Students will learn about the history, features, activities, and economy of this national park. The students will also learn about the importance of the park to the state of Maine. Students will also be taught about the state of Maine and they will learn about cities surrounding Acadia, ex. Bar Harbor.

After completing their research, students will transfer the new knowledge to a Hyper Studio presentation.

Learning the 50 States
The idea behind this project is to get the students to learn from the teacher, each other, and themselves using different sources about the 50 states. The facts that will be learned are where they are located on the map, their capitals, their large cities, population, flags, state flowers, mottoes, and anything else they find interesting. The internet will be used to find out much information over the states.

Nifty Fifty States
This is a hands-on study of the fifty states. Students will research and create projects based on their research.
